Today I’m going to be talking about our brains and what we can do to feed it. I’ll be giving a few steps we can take accelerate our growth and keep our mental performance high.
If you’re here it’s because you want to continue to grow and/or you are looking for insights and ways to overcome your challenges and reach your goals.
One of the ways to do this is by very simply taking the right steps towards looking after our brain.
We see so much everywhere the importance of looking after our bodies. Eating well and exercising are the first that come to mind and absolutely that is right at the top of the list but equal to that is our mental health and our brain health.
Thankfully, exposure to the benefits of this is increasing and awareness of mental health and men’s mental health is most definitely on the rise.
So, here are 3 things we can do to feed our brain:
- Use it
A workout isn’t just for your body, our brain needs a workout too.
To get to where we are right now, whether it’s running a business or working professionally have needed to be great at something and naturally that often soon becomes our comfort zone.
Our comfort zone is comfortable for a reason and that’s because we know what we are doing. This therefore means that it’s not going to be challenging us as much as it should in order for us to strengthen the brain.
We need to take steps towards developing and learning something that is going to challenge us, something that is built over time and requires a level of consistency and really importantly something that is engaging and that we enjoy.
It doesn’t have to be enjoyable but you know as well as I do that something engaging and enjoyable is going to help us stay with it and actually grow.
Read, write, buy a course, invest in something you want to get better at, play chess.
- Drink plenty of water.
You may have heard this before but our brain is made up of almost 75% water, so it’s important to stay hydrated.
Hydration is important for so many reasons and for brain health it’s huge.
To be able achieve our goals and overcome those challenges we face daily, we need to out ourselves in the best possible position mentally. Especially in the world we live in with the way we are bombarded with information and distraction. It can be difficult to focus.
Drinking water though is something that’s incredibly accessible and doesn’t take a great deal of effort.
If we are out of the habit of it we may need to put a little more effort initially but it’s a small price to pay for greater focus, emotional well-being, physical abilities and sleep to name a few.
The recommendation is a couple of litres a day.
If you struggle with it because you’re busy, like I used to, then take some action and get yourself a bottle which you can fill up. It’s simple and encourages me to drink because it’s sat there looking at me, judging me.
- The last one I’m going to share here today is something that I do daily and it’s breathwork.
I personally like to follow Wim Hof’s breathing method and it’s honestly had a very positive impact on my day to day and my ability to focus.
I do it every morning and wouldn’t be without it now.
Our brain needs oxygen and it’s easy to breathe poorly with all that we’ve got going on. Taking a few moments to raise our awareness of breathe brings huge benefits.
As before, focus, clarity, energy and more.
It doesn’t have to be a be shift in what you do day to day to start with. It can just be taking 30 seconds out of your day two or three times a day to focus on your breath. In for a few seconds and out for double. Then move on with your day.
Find something that works for you. Do some research!
